How did I get involved with Diamond Painting you ask? Well, in 2017 on a dark day in May (at least that was how I felt it looked) I was escorted into the Human Resources department where I was told my position would be eliminated. After 11 years with the company, a company I thought I would retire from, we were now parting ways. This led to many emotions and a realization that things were going to be very different going forward.
Diamond Painting and the Love of Crafts
Although, much of my day was spent looking for a job I gave myself a hard stop every day at 4pm so I could do other things. On a Monday in June I was perusing a craft magazine and came across “shiny” pictures that looked a lot like painting by numbers but once I took a closer look I realized how wrong I was. The company called these pictures Art with Diamonds, better known today as Diamond Painting. I love all crafts including drawing, painting, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, rock painting and I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles. I was surely intrigued.
The Price Tag of Diamond Painting
To me, Diamond Painting or Painting with Diamonds reminded me of a combination between paint by number, cross-stitching and puzzles. How much better could it get? So I had to give it a try right? I mean, this looked like so much fun, what would stop me? The price? Yup, the price was much higher than I could spend on an “craft” item to entertain me. I needed to watch every dime I was spending especially since my severance would not last that long. I had no idea how long it would take to find a new job and I couldn’t risk putting my family in any type of financial risk. I am the breadwinner so a lot is on my shoulders when it comes to our finances. But this looked right up my alley and I needed to look into it a little further before I could move forward. Could I find it cheaper somewhere else? I wasn’t sure, I’ve never seen this art form before.
Diamond Painting Research Gone Wild
So I was on a mission! Where else could I find diamond painting? And could I find a more affordable version? Let the googling begin. I found a number of sites that offered Diamond Painting and some were super cheap depending on the size. Get your tape measure out folks because most of these designs are from outside of the US and the measurements are all in centimeters. I wanted to find a small, cheap project that would give me a good idea if Diamond Painting was for me or not.
My First Design and How I Fell in Love
As I searched the numerous websites and flipped through many, many pages I finally landed on a simple picture design that I thought would work well. The design was a tree split into the four seasons. The top left corner was winter, the top right corner was fall, the bottom left corner was spring and the bottom right corner was summer. I love trees and the four seasons so I thought this one would be perfect. I placed the order.
I had only purchased a small 8 x 10 picture and it was very affordable (under $10.00). It took a very long time to come so I was keeping busy with other projects I had started until the design came. Need to keep in mind most of these projects are being shipped from over seas so patience is your friend as you wait for the mailman to deliver your new project.
It finally came in July and I literally put away my computer and said the heck with job searching today. I laid out the design and realized there were no directions. Oh no!!! Now what?? So again, I got out my computer and searched youtube for instructions on getting started with Diamond Painting. There were lots of videos, which I was super excited about, I wasn’t sure if there would be or not since I had never heard of this art form. I began watching some of the videos and realized this was easy enough – Yes! I could definitely do this.
I absolutely loved it, the little round drills (didn’t know what they were called at the time) were so shiny and sparkly, they made the picture dance. I knew I had found my next new obsession.
Would I Do it All Again?
Absolutely!!! I literally couldn’t wait to order my next one. As a matter of fact I didn’t wait, knowing how long they take I started researching more pictures to give as gifts for Christmas. I was so excited and I couldn’t wait to get started. I would highly recommend giving Diamond Painting a try and I would love to hear what you think. Tell us your story on how you got started and leave your comments below. May you all sparkle with Diamonds!! Have a Blessed Day. ~Beth~
